Cycling to stations will be easier for Roman citizens. This is promised by the PonMetro – Programma Operativo Città Metropolitane (Metropolitan Cities Operational Programme), which envisages 2000 new bike boxes in 40 metro stations in the capital.
The objective of the intervention is to foster modal interchange with public transport by presenting new bicycle parking spaces within the city’s metro stations; as well as to encourage the spread of cycling for systematic travel as described in the Integrated Action ‘Rome on the move’ of the Operational Plan, which also foresees interventions on the enhancement of the ‘bike parking’ system and ‘intermodal hubs’.
The new ‘parking spaces’ for bicycles – the first ones, protected from theft and vandalism, were inaugurated last September – will therefore be built near cycle paths that have been created or are in the process of being created.
