The demand for mobility maintains a positive trend in Italy for almost all modes of transport: in fact, growth was recorded in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022.

This is what emerges from III Quarterly Report of the Observatory on mobility trends prepared by the Technical Mission Structure (STM) of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport created in order to monitor the evolution and needs of the transport and logistics sector, so as to better plan and schedule investments in transport infrastructure and services. The analyzes are based on data made available by national multimodal operators and the Ministry’s General Directorates.

Comparing the data for the first nine months of 2023 with those of previous years, it emerges howalmost all transport modes have recovered pre-pandemic demand levels. Almost, because only passengers on local public transport are an exception and still show a deficit of between 12% and 21%.

In September 2023, there were Italians who moved every day almost 38 million (over 75% of the reference population), each of which carried out on average approximately 2.6 trips per day for a total of more 97 million trips, equal to approximately 1.9 billion trips*km/day. On weekdays we travel slightly more than on holidays (+5%) and with agreater number of average trips per-capita (+2%). Most of the trips are local in nature, in fact the percentage of average users/day travelling within 50 km is about 73% of the total.

However, there is still heterogeneity across the country: the percentage of mobile population varies from values close to 70 per cent in Liguria, Apulia, Sicily and Sardinia, to values around 80 per cent in Valle d’Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Marche, Umbria, Abruzzo and Molise, and around 75 per cent for the other regions.
