The Ministry of Sport and Youths launches ‘Bici in Comune‘, a project that aims to revolutionise urban mobility in Italy by spreading the culture of cycling as a sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly means of transport. The initiative, endowed with a 12.6 million euro fund, is based on four main lines:
- The promotion of cycling culture, encouraging cycling as an environmentally friendly alternative to the car;
- The development of cycling infrastructure by investing in the construction and upgrading of safe cycle paths;
- The promotion of cycle tourism, enhancing the cultural heritage and landscape through cycle routes;
- The organisation of cycling events that will involve citizens in cycling-related sports and recreational activities.
Italian municipalities will be able to submit projects to build cycle paths, install street furniture for bicycles, organise events and promote initiatives to spread cycling culture. Funding will be disbursed according to the population of the municipality and can be used for a wide range of interventions. To participate in the call, municipalities must submit their applications through the Sport and Health platform by 13 January 2025.
