DISCO Project in Parking Trend International: pioneering curbside management across Europe

Parking Trend International has spotlighted the DISCO project in its latest issue, with an exclusive article by our Senior Project Manager Paola Astegiano. Co-funded by the European Commission and coordinated by FIT Consulting, DISCO is redefining the use of urban space (including curbside management) across Europe with a Physical Internet (PI)-based approach.

The article focuses on DISCOCURB, a key pillar of the DISCO project, showcasing its innovative approach. By leveraging advanced data analytics and digital tools, it empowers cities to improve parking, network operations, and pickup points, making urban spaces more efficient, flexible, and responsive to real-time demands.

Four of our DISCO’s Living Labs are actively implementing smart solutions, with Copenhagen and Helsinki at the most advanced stage. Meanwhile, Barcelona and Padua are progressing toward full implementation.

Copenhagen is already seeing the benefits of the so-called Smart Zones. The city has partnered with Coding the Curbs to transform (un)loading bays around Tivoli Gardens into multifunctional spaces that dynamically shift, optimizing curbside use throughout the day.

FVH in Helsinki is deploying sensors and real-time monitoring systems to analyze how loading zones are used, improving space management and planning.

UPC in Barcelona is leveraging CCTV and deep learning models to track freight movement patterns across 12 urban goods distribution zones, integrating data into the city’s parking system.

Finally, VIU is supporting Padua in introducing an on-demand system and lockers to adapt curbside space into a flexible loading zone, while streamlining urban deliveries.

The DISCO Project will also be featured at the EPA Conference in Brussels this September, providing further insights on innovative solutions for optimal space use.
