Telefónica launches Canary Green, an ambitious Smart-City project in the Canary Islands

Telefónica Empresas has recently launched an ambitious Smart City project in Spain, in the Canary Islands. Thirteen municipalities across the islands of Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Tenerife. These municipalities have joined forces through the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands to develop a new way of experiencing and approaching tourism.

At the heart of this initiative is the innovative mobile app Canary Green, designed to offer practical tools that encourage sustainability for both locals and tourists. Users can easily report environmental concerns to local authorities using the Green Alert feature, helping communities respond swiftly to ecological issues. The app’s e-Maps functionality provides interactive digital maps highlighting sustainable easy routes to local points of interest, making eco-friendly exploration simple and enjoyable.

Additionally, Canary Green supports the local economy through the Good Market feature, connecting users to businesses recognized for their commitment to sustainability. Travelers can also use the Green Backpack function to measure the carbon footprint of their journey, offering practical suggestions on how to reduce or offset their environmental impact. To further motivate sustainable choices, the Green Coins loyalty program rewards eco-conscious behavior, allowing users to accumulate points that can be redeemed for unique local experiences, products, and services.

To facilitate the successfulness of the Canary Green project, Telefónica developed a modular Tourism Intelligence System (SIT), built upon their established Thinking City platform for smart city management. This system provides local authorities with a comprehensive dashboard, featuring twelve key indicators designed specifically for tourism monitoring. These indicators track data such as visitor concentration, search trends, booking numbers, and length of stays, allowing for more balanced tourism management and responsible use of local resources.

Ultimately, this initiative empowers both tourists and residents to make informed, sustainable choices, driving a circular economy that highlights local resources, minimizes environmental impact, and generates tangible economic benefits for communities. Canary Green’s strength also lies in its adaptable and scalable technology, which can be replicated and scaled elsewhere without requiring complex structural changes, enhancing existing local infrastructures and adapting seamlessly to specific needs.
