Bicycle mobility, market growing toward 38 billion euros

Sustainable mobility is booming, driven by a growing focus on environmentally friendly and innovative solutions.

According to the Report “Why the Bike Industry Is Ripe for a New Wave of M&A Deals” di Houlihan Lokey-Kearney, Indeed, the global bicycle market is on track to reach a value of 38 billion euros by 2028, with 60 percent growth expected in Italy alone.

More and more people have rediscovered the bicycle as an ideal means of daily urban travel. Indeed, the bicycle is a practical, environmentally friendly and healthy way to deal with city traffic, reduce air pollution and improve personal well-being. The spread of cycling also contributes to making cities more livable and sustainable, improving the quality of life.

The role of the European Declaration on Cycling

A historic step was taken in Europe with the European Declaration on Cycling (we had also covered it here), signed in April 2024 by the Council, Commission and European Parliament. This initiative officially recognizes cycling as a sustainable, accessible and affordable means of transport, promoting a vision in which cycling becomes central to the European Union’s environmental and social policies.

In particular, the Declaration emphasizes the role of bicycling in improving health, reducing pollution, and stimulating the economy, highlighting the importance of adequate infrastructure and ongoing policy support to promote bicycle use.

The 8 principles of bicycle mobility

La Dichiarazione Europea sulla ciclabilità propone quindi otto principi chiave per favorire l’espansione della mobilità ciclabile:

  1. Bicycle mobility policies: incentives for bicycle use, adequate parking, and promotion of e-bikes;
  2. Inclusivity and accessibility: ensuring bicycle use for all, including people with reduced mobility;
  3. Safe infrastructure: creation of bicycle networks connected to public transport;
  4. Strategic investments: fostering resources for the development of bicycle mobility;
  5. Road safety: infrastructure and policies that protect cyclists;
  6. Industrial development: supporting the European bicycle manufacturing sector;
  7. Multimodality and cycle tourism: integrating public transport with bike sharing;
  8. Data monitoring: collecting statistics to improve bicycle policies.

The growth of the industry: bicycles and e-Bikes leading the way

According to ANCMA, bicycle sales in Italy increased by 24 percent in 2023 over the previous year. E-Bikes have driven this growth, along with the growing popularity of cyclotourism and the use of bicycles for daily commuting. Data that show a growing interest in sustainable mobility and the adoption of environmentally friendly means of transportation.

The European Cycling Declaration thus marked an important step toward a greener future. Promoting cycling, with investment in infrastructure and dedicated policies, is a concrete solution to reducing environmental impact and building more sustainable cities. The bicycle is more than a means of transportation: it is a symbol of change and progress toward sustainable mobility for all.
