Connected and automated mobility: Ohmio Lift shuttle trial kicks off in Turin with IN2CCAM project
On Dec. 4, Turin welcomed Ohmio Lift, an automated shuttle destined to become the centerpiece of the IN2CCAM project trial. This project, funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe research and innovation program, involves 21 partners from 10 European countries and is being developed through 6 Living Labs, including one located right in the Piedmontese capital.
Starting in January 2025, the shuttle will operate on an urban circuit within the Turin area. The main objective is to test and develop connected and automated mobility services capable of integrating vehicles, infrastructure and users in a highly cooperative system.
Turin’s role in the IN2CCAM project.
The Turin Living Lab is coordinated by TTS Italia (of which FIT is a member), with support from the LINKS Foundation and 5T, companies with long experience in the field of smart mobility. The trial also sees the involvement of several stakeholders, including the City of Turin, GTT (Gruppo Torinese Trasporti), the supplier of the automated shuttle, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which provided the necessary authorization for the project.
Objectives of the experiment
The initiative aims to extend the application of cooperative, connected and automated mobility (CCAM) to the urban context. CCAM represents an advanced subcategory of cooperative intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS), recognized as one of the pillars for the future of the automotive industry.
Specific objectives of the project include:
- Application of dynamic traffic management strategies: the use of connected and automated mobility will optimize the flow of vehicles, reducing congestion and improving the overall efficiency of urban traffic.
- Simulation of impacts on the road network: the effects of traffic management strategies under different scenarios of connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) adoption will be analyzed. This study will provide a deeper understanding of the potential transformations of the road system.
- Urban CCAM ecosystem development: the trial aims to integrate autonomous vehicles and connected infrastructure into the city context, ensuring greater synergy between technology and mobility.
A step toward the future of mobility
The Ohmio Lift shuttle represents cutting-edge technology designed to operate in a fully automated manner, ensuring safety and efficiency. Through the IN2CCAM project, Turin stands as one of Europe’s leading centers for research and development in the field of intelligent and sustainable mobility. This will not only help improve the quality of life for citizens, but also position the Piedmontese capital as a virtuous example for the adoption of CCAM technologies in the urban environment.
Through this initiative, Europe is thus taking a further step toward a more sustainable, integrated and intelligent transportation system capable of meeting the challenges of modernity and anticipating the future needs of society.
