Mobility, growing demand in the transport sector
Demand for mobility in the transport sector grew in the second quarter of the year. This is revealed by data from the Quarterly Report on Italian mobility trends prepared by the Struttura Tecnica di Missione (STM) of the MIT, based on data collected by the Passenger and Freight Mobility Observatory. In the second quarter of 2024, passenger and freight road traffic was 1/4% higher than in the same period last year.
In particular, with regard to rail transport, against an offer of High Speed (HS) and Intercity services of +4% and +1% respectively, passenger traffic is 2% and 6% higher, a trend also confirmed for regional transport. On the other hand, against an offer of domestic and international air flights increased by 10%, passenger and freight traffic increased by 12% and 19%, respectively, compared to the same period in 2023. Finally, only ferry passenger traffic fell, while cruise traffic increased by 23%.
The report also analyses the distribution of air passenger and cargo traffic by geographical area, origin/destination, based on data processed by ENAC and Local Public Transport (LPT) data processed by the National Observatory.
