Tap&go, the service for travelling on public transport introduced by the European UPPER project is a success in Rome

The Tap&go service, made available on Rome’s public transport as part of measure 6 of the UPPER European project (of which FIT is a partner and in which Rome is one of the cities involved), is proving a great success, so much so that already three out of ten users choose it to travel on the capital’s public transport.

Introduced in October 2022 on all means of transport in the capital, the Tap&Go service allows passengers to pay for their tickets directly on board, simply by holding their credit or debit card near the ticket machine.

The city of Rome was the first in Italy to invest in the development of the system in both the metro and surface public transport fleets, as recalled by the Mobility Councillor of the Municipality of Rome, Eugenio Patanè. A service that, according to the data, is highly appreciated by citizens and tourists alike. From October 2022 to May 2024, in fact, almost 47 million taps were made in terms of metro and surface service, reaching peaks of almost 100,000 taps in one day. In May 2023, the daily average was around 52,000 taps, while in May 2024 it exceeded 88,000 taps, an increase of +70%.

Also under Measure 6 of the European UPPER project, whose objective is to ensure better accessibility of public transport, the introduction of digitisation of tickets will now continue with the introduction of MaaS – Mobility as a Service – and the possibility of providing multiple ticketing through tap&go, i.e. the possibility of purchasing several tickets simultaneously with the same card (currently under development). *** Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) ***
